Why do Yankees (aka Northeasterners) glorify the Mafia in film productions like Goodfellas, and the Sopranos?

March 302010

Why is it that people from the North glorify the mafia through television shows, and movies? I often see Northeasterners come down to the South, talking with these "tough guy" accents, and acting like mobsters, as if such behavior is cool. Why is it that this "toughness", mafia, mentality is so embraced in the Northeast?

Just for the record, my question has nothing to do with Hicks in the South, so please don’t address that stereotype in your response.

I just want to limit this question to the stereotype that I addressed in my question. And, yes, I recognize it IS a stereotype because not all Northeasterners act like "tough guys", and there are some dumbass, northeastern wannabes in the South who display that same behavior.

I’ve heard this question before.
Well, many Yanks are of Italian descent and for some ungodly reason they romanticize the mafia, but when my husband and broke down in Pooler, Georgia on our way home to NY from Orlando, the mechanic and all his friends automatically brought up the mafia as if we were automatically in it. In fact, I completely stayed out of it because I was so disgusted and they were fascinated when my husband told them that I was Italian-American.
My father was born here but his parents were born in Italy and he HATES the mafia. You can’t even bring up The Godfather or Sopranos or any of the countless movies that make us look like thugs. He’s always said they’re criminals, ruthless bloodthirsty animals and never get involved and his extended family was in it and he rejected it. Why anyone would want to emulate them is beyond me except maybe the rush of power and false sense of invincibility.

What are the best films about ancient Rome and Greece?

March 302010

I’m looking for some good swords and sandals epics.

"Ben Hur" may be the best one in my humble opinion.

"Gladiator" is going to be mentioned a lot. I didn’t like it, but most viewers did.

"The King of Kings" with Jeffery Hunter as the blond-haired, blue-eyed Jesus is good, too, as long as you just ignore the gross errors and enjoy.

"Jason and the Argonauts" (1963) Don’t be fooled by the CGI crap-fest. Stick to Ray Harryhausen’s vision of Jason, Hercules, and the others as they search the world for a golden fleece. The skeleton battle scene alone is worth the rental!

"The 300 Spartans" (1962) truly does justice to the sacrifices at Thermopylae. Maybe the best telling of the tale, far superior to that uber-violent cartoonish thing "300" (2006) .

What’s the big difference between "Independent" Films & Mainstream movies?

March 302010

I know they’re not done by Fox, Universal, Tri Star, ETC but aren’t the companies that make these "independent" films independent companies? How do you tell one from another. Only example of the top of my head is Boys Don’t Cry & it still had super star Hilary Swank! Clarification please?
She wasn’t a "Star" big time. She had also been on BH 90210 . I bet Aaron Spelling regretted letting her go after being on (Original BH 90210) after that. I think you’re right. Maybe other than "Next Karate Kid" & BH 90210 were her only major appearances. I like her better as a movie that TV show actress anyway but she was good as "Carly" the single mom who dated Steve & worked at the Peach Pit until her father got sick (in the show) & she didn’t feel right having a stranger like a private nurse so she left Beverly Hills with her son Zack. It made me sad b/c Steve had bonded not only with Carly but her 6 y/o son. At least that gave him practice for later on when he had his own child lol.

Boys Don’t Cry made her a star, before that she only had "The Next Karate Kid" on her resume, other than that her only claim to fame was being married to the gay guy from the show with the Down’s Syndrome kid.

Anyway, yes some films that are classified as independent are produces by small companies. However some are produced by individuals, without the involvement of a of a company. Clerks comes to mind, Kevin Smith financed it by maxing out his credit cards and selling his laser disk player. It was truly an independent film and there are many others, an even better example is El Mariachi which Robert Rodriguez made for seven grand. Now even though they were made without a major studio, some companies buy the distribution rights and promote them. I believe that Miramax Films distributed both of the above mentioned films.

How many conservatives have actually boycotted Hollywood films and TV shows?

March 302010

Posted in films | 18 Comments »

I constantly see conservatives on Y!A complaining about liberalism in Hollywood, so I was wondering if any conservatives here had actually made it a point to boycott films and TV shows with actors, directors, and producers whose political views they deem objectionable.

Me for one. I will not watch any movie or tv show with certain stars in them because I do not agree with their politics. I support their right to have and voice opinions as they choose, but I will not support their careers or help provide them with a public forum by buying their product.

Just a few names on the list.
Danny Glover
Tim Robbins
Susan Saradon
Alec Baldwin
George Clooney
Michael Moore

I look to movies and tv to be entertained. I really do not care what these people think politically.

Bachelor Party is a 1984 comedy film starring Tom Hanks, Tawny Kitaen, Adrian Zmed, Robert Prescott, and Deborah Harmon, directed by Neal Israel. The original music score was composed by Robert Folk.

In the film, party-animal Rick Gassko (Hanks) deciding to settle down and marry his girlfriend Debbie Thompson (Kitaen) and his friends throw him one final debauchery-laden bash. A notorious scene in the film involves a quaalude-popping, cocaine-snorting donkey who dies of a drug overdose.

* “Shocking, shameless, sinful, wicked. And the party hasn’t even started.”
* “A man’s tradition every woman should know about.”
