I have never seen a more believable death in terms of acting. I don’t even have a part of me that says, "hey, it’s a movie, he’s just acting."

Thats probably one of my all time favorite scenes in any movie. I’d have to agree with you in that its hard to find that part of you that can rationalize it as just being a movie, its basically how I would imagine what those men went through.

A clip from an early TV Movie starring a young Tom Hanks, in which his fascination with Role-Playing Games leads him down the toboggan ride to insanity.

One thing you’ll notice here is that, while the material is the worst sort of sensationalist panic-mongering, Hanks is actually pretty damned good even in this early performance. He’s a great guy and this is not meant to make fun of him.

However, seeing a respected actor perform truly laughable material is always good for a chuckle. One viewing and you’ll quickly see that his Oscars for “Philadelphia” and “Forrest Gump” were just to make up for how this performance was shamefully overlooked.

In the Film Cast Away with Tom Hanks, Would the Volleyball "Wilson" be considered his alter ego?

or his conscience? In the film, it seems as though he relates to Wilson and even treats him as though he were a living being. When Wilson is lost at sea, does this symbolize part of Hanks’ character dying?

Perhaps a little of both. A bit like an imaginary friend, his only friend. With the exception of Kelly, Wilson became his reason for living.
The scene where he looses Wilson is the point at which he has finally given up. I like your thoughts about it being part of himself dying.
