What’s the difference between films in terms of "120" or "35mm"?
February 112010
I see all these different film cameras around with different types of film that they can process.
So what’s the difference between all of these types of film? Is 120 better quality that 35mm? and is 110 just slightly lower quality? or does the number have nothing to do with the quality of the film?
basically, i just want to know the difference between those films.
thanks
It is both size and quality. These are three different size films. 110 is the smallest, then 35mm and then 120.
The larger the film the better the quality of the photograph though not the film. Larger film simply has more info to work with so you get a better more finely detailed print.
110 film will be relatively hard to find though it is still made. It is very small and is associated with small point and shoot cameras like a Kodak instamatic. It measures 13×17mm
35mm film is the most widely available and is used in both point and shoot and SLR cameras. It measure 24mmx36mm.
120 film is the largest and is used in medium format camera like Hasselblad and Mamiya. This is a roll film and can be used in various aspect ratios. It is 72cm long

The difference are in the size of the film, the 35mm format is 24mm high (normal frames are 36×24 mm). The 120 format is 60mm high and the most common formats that use that film are 45×60 mm 60×60mm and 70×60mm. Bigger format means that you get less grains in a frame, more details and a higher resolution.
I forgot to say that the 110 format is a really small roll film that is only 13mm high, I’ve never seen it in real life, so I’d guess it’s quite unusual.
