    it isnt useless. in the sport biathlon, you usually proceed into the range free skating so you can take off your poles and get at yur rifle. Free skating also gains alot of muscle.

    Most skiers use …
    Most skiers use poles for balance. By doing the free skate you learn to balance on your skis while propelling yourself forward. Then when you add your poles you can really ski. All racers and elite skiers free skate to practice their balance and learn how to use their legs for maximum propulsion.
