I’m surprised no one has said "Punchline" (1988), the edgiest performance Hanks has ever given. He plays an aspiring stand-up comic who kills onstage but whose personal life is a mess (disapproving dad who doesn’t know he’s dropped out of medical school to try to make it in showbiz; hopelessly unrequited crush on married fellow comic Sally Field). His stand-up scenes are funny, caustic, and brilliant, not just when he’s good, but also when he flops — you can practically smell the desperation. It was probably the last time (until "The Ladykillers") that he successfully played a guy who wasn’t a lovable Everyman.

ANother underrated Hanks movie I like is "Volunteers" (1985). Very funny, with great support from wife-to-be Rita Wilson and John Candy.

Forrest Gump, The Green Mile and The Terminal aren’t really underrated.

I’d go with Turner and Hooch, Castaway, That Thing You Do, Saving Private Ryan, The LadyKillers, Catch Me If You Can, Toy Story. Apollo Thirteen.

Omg, The Burbs! No one ever mentions that any more.

I would have to go with BIG or Turner and Hooch. Turner and Hooch is more of an underrated film then BIG, but yeah.

You people are listing movies he was recognized for, or that did quite well in the box office. That is not what you call underrated……..in my opinion his most underrated film is "The ‘Burbs"…….funny flick!!
